I started with nothing and in 1 year had 230 machines out making a net profit of $7000 mo. Check out the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SPsKRe2GToHow much money are average people making from owning vending machines?
This probably wont be your best answer but it all depends on location.

Having a beverage machine in the right place could mean the difference between 5 sales a day to 100. You need to make sure it is in a high traffic and easily accessible area. Once you have a location you need to verify that it is O.K. to set up a vending machine there. Then research the cost of the machine and then how much it is going to cost you in stock for the machine. get to the point where you can estimate how much it cost you to make a sale. (like how much does each can of soda cost you.)

Once you know that number you will know roughly how many sales you will need to make before you can make your money back on the machine. An example would be if a soda vending machine cost you $1000 and you are selling cans of soda at .50 cents but each can costs you .25 cents. you are going to have to sell 4000 cans of soda before you are even making any money.

Research the area, figure out the traffic volume and look for competitors near by. Most people I know making more than a little pocket change on vending machines usually have quite a few... not just one.

Location is your biggest thing. Even if you are placing it in a room. different sides of the room could change the amount of money you make. Placing it by the entrance and exit door could earn you more money than in the back corner. It seems kind of odd but it is true.
