Making German Chocolate cake and don't have the vegetable oil .. what can I substitute it with?

Stores are closed and I need it made for a work party tomorrow. I have olive oil and butter? Am I screwed or what?Making German Chocolate cake and don't have the vegetable oil .. what can I substitute it with?
Melted butter, it will improve the flavor. Or if no butter, you can use melted margarine or shortening.

If you have any other type of oil other than vegetable oil on hand - like olive or peanut oil, you can use those. I wouldn't use coconut unless it is expeller pressed or your cake will taste like coconut.

Butter-shortening-oil can be substituted for each other at equal measures. If the recipe calls for oil, you will want to melt the butter or shortening first.

Apple sauce is a good option if none of the others are available - BUT reduce sugar, as apple sauce is sweet and will make your recipe sweeter. Also, the applesauce will make the cake lighter and a bit more crumbly, not as rich and moist.Making German Chocolate cake and don't have the vegetable oil .. what can I substitute it with?
If it's a box mix try this substitute for oil:

3/4 cup water

3 eggs

3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

Here is a variation that sounds like a hit:

GERMAN CHOCOLATE ';KILLER'; CAKE

1 German chocolate cake mix, prepared per package directions

1 can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk

1 jar caramel/butterscotch sauce

1 lg. Cool Whip or whipping cream

4 Heath bars, crumbled

Bake German chocolate cake according to package directions. While the cake is still warm, punch holes with the end of a wooden spoon halfway down through the cake about 1 inch apart. Fill holes half way with sweetened condensed milk and half way with caramel sauce. Top with Cool Whip. Sprinkle Heath bar crumbles on top.

scratch recipe:

1 (4-oz.) package of Baker's Sweetened Chocolate

1/2 cup boiling water

1 cup butter or margarine

2 cups sugar

4 egg yolks

4 eggs whites

1 teaspoon Vanilla

2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

Butter will make it a bit drier so use 1/2 a stick more than the recipe calls for. Definitely no olive oil...it's for savory items, not sweet ones.
The melted butter would be delicious and work fine!
you can use both.

=)
use the butter........olive oil is powerful and will make the cake not taste so good
apple sauce
