We have an animal in our woods making a very weird screeching sound?

We live in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. Recently we have heard this animal making a very loud and weird screeching sound. We can hear it running through the forest as it runs over the leaves. My neighbor thinks its a coyote but I've heard coyotes and none that sound like this. I think it might be a fox. Does anyone have any ideas? We are worried about our domestic cats that stay outside some of the time. Thanks for your help and this is a serious question. We have an animal in our woods making a very weird screeching sound?
Could it be a wild turkey with an off-key voice? Turkeys do make some really odd sounds from time to time, and they also run most of the time out ahead of whatever disturbs them, rather than fly.We have an animal in our woods making a very weird screeching sound?
For anyone who cares: it turned out to be a fox. We saw it last night, right before dark and saw it making those weird noises. It's a little gray colored fox. I didn't realize how small those things are! Report Abuse

Owls make screeching sounds, and so do some night birds.

But that would not explain the running through the leaves sounds so I would have to guess maybe it is a coyote and if it is then you should be worried about your kitties. If you can hear the running through the leaves sounds then the screeching sounds would be very loud.

Then again it can be the one eyed monster that lurks in the leaves and screeches at the moon.
It would be a great help if you could record it if it is still screeching. If you do, try to send it to me or put it in the internet, you know.

It could be a bird or a mammal. I don't know of any more animals that screech. It could also be an animal still waiting to be discovered. Or you are just a clairaudience.
